Ibanda school of nursing and midwifery is a cost Centre of Uganda martyrs ibanda hospital a private not for profit institution that belongs to the network of Roman Catholic Church Health Institutions in Uganda, whose advisory body is UCMB. It is owned by Mbarara Archdiocese and registered with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council and Ministry of Education and Sports (BTVET).
The school started in 1995 as a midwifery training school which has its roots in an Aid nursing school that started in 1970, with a curriculum of 2 years training. Therefore, the Aid Nursing School is the embryo of the present Midwifery and Nursing school.
In 1994 the UNMC allowed the hospital to start an enrolled midwifery school instead of registered midwifery school. In January 1995 the school was opened having an enrollment of 20 students, with Ms. Fortunate Bitakwataine as the principal.
In 2000 the ministry of education and sports in collaboration with ministry of health, developed a strategic plan to offer the minimum health care package in the country which required a minimum of 5 different cadres of staff at each health unit. The health sector strategic plan 2000/2001 – 2004/2005, targeted to produce a single cadre at operational level with the skill mix that would competently and effectively meet the community health needs through delivery of the minimum health package.
To implement the above it was from this note that ibanda school of midwifery started training comprehensive nurses. Later the school advanced to training separate courses as midwifery and nursing independently.
Presently the school has a capacity of 300 students and offers certificate in Midwifery, Nursing and diploma in midwifery and Nursing extension.
